Communities Mental Health &
Wellbeing Programme

Since 2022, the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund have supported a programme of sessions which encourage people who may not otherwise have participated in seasports to get afloat. The sessions have run as a partnership between Kintyre Seasports, Kintyre Canoe Club.

This programme makes seasports very accessible, and with the support of instructors and volunteers almost anyone who would like to can take part in some way.  People of different genders, ages and abilities can take part together in an encouraging and non-competitive environment.

The programme has a strong track record of improving health and wellbeing and connecting people to community groups.  In every feedback we have had, either formally or informally, the vast majority of participants have identified as being from one or more of the target groups.

This successful programme has now operated for 3 years and, based on feedback from participants in the programme with lived experience, builds on the success so far by supporting participants to become experienced and qualified volunteers in local organisations. Introductory sessions have introduced 38 people to seasports, with many taking part in more than one sport, and have led to participants joining clubs, talking part in training courses, and purchasing their own seasports equipment to get out on the water.

Finding Joy on the Water Again

I’ve always loved paddle boarding but had to stop due to health issues.  I took a brave step and signed up for Kintyre Seasports' Community Mental Health and Well-being program, choosing sailing and powerboating. This morning, I almost didn’t go. It was tough to push myself, but I’m so glad I did.  I had a fantastic day—feeling the wind on my face and the waves under my feet brought back many good memories.  I want to give a big shout-out to Jamie Rodgers and Naomi Cameron.  They’re incredible, experienced, supportive instructors, and they made my day special. I highly recommend water sports if you’re considering trying something new or facing challenges.

Be brave, take that chance, and you might discover something extraordinary.”
